Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day 2005

January 17, 2005 -- More than 400 LA Conservation Corps youth participants and community volunteers came together to make the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. a day “on,” instead of a day off, by assisting to clean up the homes and neighborhoods of more than 40 senior citizens. LA Conservation Corps youth who participated ranged in ages from 13 to 24, and the community volunteers came from organizations including the Lord, Bissell & Brook Law Firm, the Midnight Mission, the American Red Cross of Greater LA and the Bruin Corps.

On hand to motivate the volunteers at a ceremony to kick off the day of service were speakers including Councilwoman Jan Perry, Councilman Ed Reyes, Carol Watkins of the Mayor's Office and senior community activist, Mrs. Jesse Samuels.

Together the participants removed tall weeds, bagged trash, cleared brush, cleaned alleys, and removed bulky items that were a safety hazard for the seniors. Even Gayle Anderson from KTLA came out and rolled up her sleeves to help!
