The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works will launch this year’s Christmas Tree Recycling program at the Los Angeles Zoo today at 9:30 a.m. Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Councilmember Tom LaBonge of Council District 4, Board of Public Works President Cynthia M. Ruiz, Public Works Commissioner Yolanda Fuentes, and general managers of participating city agencies will attend the press event. “The Department of Public Works Christmas Tree Recycling program is a simple and convenient service that the Bureau of Sanitation renders to the Los Angeles residents every year,” said Board of Public Works President Cynthia M. Ruiz.
“We encourage everyone to work with the City and help the environment by recycling their Christmas trees.” The recycling program offers Angelinos two ways to properly dispose of holiday trees. Residents with green bins can recycle in three simple steps: remove ornaments; cut tree in pieces; and place tree in green bin. Those unable to use their green bins can bring their trees to one of 16 tree dropoff locations all over the City on January 7, 8, 14 and 15 from 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Employees from the Bureau of Sanitation, Department of Recreation and Parks, and youth volunteers from the LA Conservation Corps’ Clean and Green Program will staff each of the 16 drop-off sites.

Los Angeles City Municipal Code 57.21.0 states that it is illegal to leave trees on the curb, as they may be a fire hazard. The Department of Public Works Bureau of Sanitation, therefore, collaborates every year with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), and the Department of Recreation and Parks to promote the tree recycling program. As incentives, energy-efficient light bulbs and tree seedlings courtesy of LADWP, and coupons for free 20-lb. bags of mulch, the end result of recycled holiday trees, will be distributed at the tree drop-off locations.
