Barbara Romero

Director and General Manager / LA Sanitation & Environment

Barbara Romero Headshot

Barbara Romero is the 2024 Corps Champion. She is a natural choice for this special award and a cherished member of the Corps Family. Barbara made an early stop on her career pathway at the Corps, managing the Corps’ first AmeriCorps program and founded Girls Today Women Tomorrow, which was incubated at the organization before launching as a separate nonprofit. She has worked alongside the Corps in her leadership roles at the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority and at the City of LA, as a Board of Public Works Commissioner, Deputy Mayor of City Services and now Director and General Manager of LA Sanitation. She continues to create opportunities for our Corpsmembers and is helping to develop a streamlined path from programs like the Corps into City jobs.

Barbara is a true champion of the Corps, our Corpsmembers, the communities we serve and the climate that is changing the way we all live. LA Sanitation & Environment currently funds some of the Corps cleanup projects, specifically those that address nuisance alleys in Central LA, and partners with the Corps to plant thousands of trees across LA each year. We are immensely grateful to Barbara and all she has done and continues to do for the LA Conservation Corps!

This year’s Corporate Champion Award is presented to SoCalGas. As the nation’s largest natural gas distribution utility serving nearly 21 million consumers throughout Central and Southern California, SoCalGas’ mission is to build the cleanest, safest and most innovative energy infrastructure company in America. In support of that mission, SoCalGas aspires to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045. SoCalGas demonstrates its values of Doing the Right Thing, Shaping the Future and Championing Others throughout its operations as well as through its community giving and employee volunteerism. SoCalGas plans to invest $50 million to help drive positive change in diverse and underserved communities across five years.

The Corps and SoCalGas have a long and strong partnership. Since 1998, SoCalGas has invested over $700,000 in the Corps. Their support includes grants to provide supportive services for Corpsmembers, PPE for Corpsmembers during the pandemic, and for projects such as: community garden composting hubs, food waste prevention, and rain barrel installation. The Corps’ mission aligns squarely with SoCalGas’ charitable giving priorities of safety, sustainability, and social impact.
